Ashtanga Strength Elements

From the gross to the subtle, this is what Yoga is about. To do that we start with the physical body using asanas and movement to create a fit and strong body, which gives us the framework to cultivate a fit and strong mind. Ashtanga Yoga method is brilliant as it helps us cultivate physical strength while at the same time helping us evolve our mental and spiritual realm. The asanas themselves become more and more challenging as you work through the first and into the second and third series’. This workshop is designed to assist practitioners on the physical plane focused on fundamental techniques that will aid in building strength and a solid physical foundation that will assist the student in their Ashtanga asana practice, and their overall spiritual journey. Spend the day with Krista learning how to cultivate strength and steadiness of body and mind by exploring alignment, isolated strength building exercises, meditation techniques, positive thinking, affirmations, and much more! Suitable for all levels. 2 hours

Meditation

Meditation is one of Krista’s passions and something she loves to share with students from all yogic traditions. Come sit with Krista and learn some of her favorite meditation techniques, tips and tools to start, cultivate, or deepen your seated practice. Krista will teach you several different meditations, lecture on some of the benefits to creating a seated practice, provide viable tips to help you start and maintain a seated practice and inspire you to make the time in your busy schedule. She will also devote time to answer questions. 2 hours

Understanding Your Spine In Space

VERY IMPORTANT SESSION. In this workshop we will look at the human spine, its purpose, how it moves, how to keep it healthy and happy through proper alignment on and off the mat. Then we will utilize Sun Salutations and other standing and seated postures as a case study for gaining mastery over how to move your spine through space, in order to improve your everyday postural awareness, proprioception, and yoga asana practice. This session is a must for anyone wanting to age gracefully, gain greater understanding of body mechanics or reduce pain in the body. 2 hrs.

BBD: Breath, Bandhas, Drishti

Deep breathing with sound gives us body and mind control. Bandhas are internal muscular and energetic centers, that, when activated and engaged pulls our attention within. Mastery of bandhas enable us to gain strength from the inside out, which, over time, gives us complete body control. Drishti’s are gaze points to direct our attention during asana practice. In order to successfully progress in our practice, we must understand the concepts and learn how to apply them in our asana practice. But how? Spend the afternoon with Krista exploring these invaluable concepts in depth, and learn how to apply them in the asanas of primary series. Serious work and some serious fun! Suitable for all levels. 2 hours

Body Mechanics for strength and functional mobility

Incorporating a combination of mobility exercises, core stabilization, yoga, rehabilitation, and functional training, each class will help you improve strength, mobility, coordination, stability, proprioception and balance. This is an eye opening session for dedicated Ashtanga Yoga students who desire greater body control, body awareness and who want to gain mastery over proprioception.

Introduction to Second Series

The second series of the Ashtanga Yoga tradition is called Nadi Shodhana (nerve cleansing). The asanas of second series are comprised of backbends, powerful and strong balancing postures, hip openers and deep twists that thoroughly cleanse the nervous system. In this session we will explore the second series syllabus of asanas. Students currently practicing second series and beyond will gain greater understanding of the form and purpose of these postures and take their practice to another level. Students still working through primary will find tremendous inspiration for what comes beyond primary series. All students are welcome and all students will truly find a greater appreciation for this yoga method, the sequences of the series’ and a new found level of gratitude for their personal daily practice. It is highly recommended that all who attend have an established practice in the Ashtanga Yoga method. 2 hours.

Air Time : Handstand + Forearm Balance + Headstand Variations

Learning handstand, forearm balance and headstand takes time and a bit of strength. Learn how to safely learn and grow in handstands and forearm balances. Once you’ve warmed up and refined the basics, you’ll learn to transition more confidently and gracefully into a handstand, forearm balance, and headstand. You’ll go up with one leg, two legs and lay the foundation for “pressing” into these poses. If you’re stuck or scared of handstands and going upside down, Krista will help you build strength and confidence for these postures with a step-by-step approach that you can do on your own at the wall! Just in case things get ugly, you’ll learn how to safely fall out of these poses without hurting yourself or impaling your neighbor. 2 hours.

Oppositions of Force 1: Standing Sequence

Hands down one of the most valuable workshops you will ever attend! Every balance has a counter balance, every push has a pull, every extension a flex- ion. The Ashtanga Yoga practice is a full syllabus of opposing forces. Using the Ashtanga standing sequence postures we will break down each posture in order to see, feel, understand and apply the concept of opposition of force. A very physically challenging session, be prepared to break a sweat, shake, squirm and learn! Suitable for all levels but be prepared to work! 2 hours.
