What is an Ashtanga Yoga Apprenticeship?

An Ashtanga Yoga apprenticeship is an immersive, hands-on learning experience that allows aspiring teachers to develop their skills through observation, mentorship, and practical teaching. Unlike a traditional teacher training program that focuses on completing a set curriculum, an apprenticeship emphasizes continued growth under the guidance of experienced teachers.

Apprentices may assist in Mysore classes, learn how to offer safe and effective adjustments, deepen their understanding of yoga philosophy, and gain confidence through real teaching experience. The goal is not only to become a knowledgeable instructor but also to embody the discipline, consistency, and humility that are at the heart of the Ashtanga tradition.

Yoga Teacher Training vs. Apprenticeship

While both teacher training and apprenticeships help students grow as practitioners and educators, they serve different purposes.

A Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) provides the foundational knowledge needed to teach. It typically includes anatomy, philosophy, sequencing, ethics, and teaching methodology over a structured period of time.

An apprenticeship builds on that foundation through ongoing mentorship and real-world experience. Apprentices continue learning by assisting classes, receiving feedback, observing experienced teachers, and refining their teaching skills over time.

Many students find that completing both a teacher training and an apprenticeship provides the most comprehensive path to becoming a confident and capable yoga teacher.

Should You Become a Yoga Teacher?

Teacher training isn't just for those who want to lead classes. Many students enroll simply to deepen their personal practice and gain a greater understanding of yoga.

If you feel called to share yoga with others, enjoy lifelong learning, or want to explore yoga beyond the physical postures, teacher training may be a meaningful next step. You'll develop a stronger understanding of movement, breath, philosophy, and the traditions that make yoga such a transformative practice.

Whether your goal is to teach or simply to grow, teacher training can be a rewarding experience that supports both your personal and professional journey.

What are the Benefits of Deepening Your Yoga Practice?

A consistent yoga practice offers benefits that extend far beyond increased flexibility or strength. As you deepen your practice, you'll begin to develop greater body awareness, mental clarity, emotional resilience, and self-discipline.

A deeper practice can help you:

- Build a more sustainable and consistent routine.

- Improve strength, balance, and mobility.

- Develop greater awareness of breath and movement.

- Better understand yoga philosophy and its application in daily life.

- Cultivate patience, focus, and mindfulness.

- Become part of a supportive and inspiring community.

Whether or not you ever teach yoga, investing in your practice can positively impact every aspect of your life.

How to Choose a Yoga Training Program

Choosing a yoga teacher training program is about finding a learning environment that aligns with your goals and values. Every program has its own approach, so it's important to look beyond the certification and consider the overall experience.

Ask yourself what you're hoping to gain. Are you interested in teaching, deepening your personal practice, or both? Look for a program with experienced instructors, a curriculum that balances philosophy and practical application, and opportunities for mentorship and personal guidance.

A strong training should help you build confidence in your practice while encouraging curiosity, self-reflection, and continued growth. The right program won't just prepare you to teach—it will support your development as both a student and a lifelong practitioner.

Hear from previous graduates

"My apprenticeship with Krista completely transformed my practice and my confidence as a teacher. Her knowledge of the body and the Ashtanga practice is incredible, and she has a unique ability to help every student truly understand what they're learning.

Each weekend was filled with valuable lessons, hands-on experience, and thoughtful guidance. Krista challenged me to grow while supporting me every step of the way. I left the apprenticeship feeling confident in my ability to teach and safely adjust students. I'm incredibly grateful for the experience and truly believe there is no other program like it."
