One of the most common questions we hear at The Yoga Shala is:
The answer is YES.
Despite its reputation as a physically demanding practice, Ashtanga Yoga can be an excellent path for beginners when taught in a supportive environment and adapted to each student's unique needs.
At The Yoga Shala in Maitland, Florida, we welcome students of all ages, fitness levels, and experience backgrounds. Whether you're completely new to yoga, returning after a long break, recovering from injury, or simply looking for a consistent movement practice, Ashtanga Yoga can meet you where you are.
The key is learning the practice progressively rather than trying to master everything at once.
To attend the full-day workshop, simply register for both sessions listed above. Booking the morning practice session and the later workshop together reserves your spot for the complete experience and allows you to move seamlessly through the full arc of the day.
Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional system of yoga that combines:

Breath (Pranayama)
Movement (Asana)
Focus (Drishti)
Mindfulness
Consistent practice
Unlike many modern yoga classes that vary from day to day, Ashtanga follows a structured sequence of postures designed to gradually build strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, and mental clarity.
Students learn the sequence step by step, allowing the body and mind to develop safely over time.

One of the things that makes Ashtanga Yoga unique is that it is a traditional lineage-based practice that has been passed down from teacher to student for generations.
Unlike many modern yoga classes where the instructor creates a different sequence for each class, Ashtanga follows a structured and intentional system of postures that has been carefully preserved and taught through a traditional lineage. Each posture, breath, and movement serves a purpose and prepares the practitioner for what comes next.
This consistency allows students to build a deeper understanding of their practice over time. Rather than constantly learning new sequences, students develop familiarity, confidence, self-awareness, and a meaningful relationship with the practice itself.
At The Yoga Shala, we honor both the physical and philosophical traditions of Ashtanga Yoga. Students are introduced not only to the postures, but also to the Sanskrit terminology, breathing techniques, and cultural roots that have shaped this practice for decades.
Our program is led by Krista Shirley, Central Florida's only Level Two Authorized Ashtanga Yoga teacher, authorized through the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysore, India. This authorization represents years of dedicated study within the traditional Ashtanga Yoga lineage and a commitment to preserving the integrity of the practice while making it accessible to modern students.
For beginners, this means you are learning a time-tested system that has helped practitioners around the world develop greater strength, mobility, focus, and well-being through a structured and progressive approach.
Many people assume Ashtanga Yoga is only for advanced practitioners. In reality, beginners often appreciate the structure and consistency that the practice provides.
Benefits include:

You always know what comes next. Rather than learning a different sequence every class, you gradually build familiarity and confidence.

Ashtanga develops functional strength throughout the entire body, including the core, shoulders, hips, and legs.

Consistent practice can help improve joint mobility, flexibility, and overall movement quality.

The combination of breath and movement helps calm mental chatter and improve concentration.

Many students report feeling more grounded, balanced, and emotionally resilient after practice
At The Yoga Shala, beginners typically start through Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga.
Mysore Style is the traditional method of learning Ashtanga Yoga.
Instead of following a led class, students practice at their own pace while receiving individualized guidance from an experienced teacher.
This allows:
Personalized instruction
Modifications when needed
Safe progression
Individual attention
A non-competitive learning environment
Many beginners find Mysore Style less intimidating than keeping up with a large group class because instruction is tailored specifically to their needs.
Absolutely NOT.
One of the biggest misconceptions about yoga is that flexibility is required before starting.
The truth is:
Yoga helps improve flexibility. Flexibility is not a prerequisite for yoga.
Many students begin their practice feeling stiff, tight, or limited in their movement. With consistency, mobility and flexibility naturally improve over time.
You do not need to touch your toes, sit cross-legged comfortably, or perform advanced postures to begin.

Starting yoga can feel intimidating, especially if you've never taken a class before or believe you're not flexible enough, strong enough, or experienced enough to begin.
At The Yoga Shala, we strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment where students can learn at their own pace and develop confidence in their practice over time.
Our Mysore-style program allows each student to receive individualized instruction within a group setting. Rather than trying to keep up with a room full of people, you'll receive guidance based on your unique needs, abilities, and goals. Modifications are offered when appropriate, and students are encouraged to progress gradually and sustainably.
In addition to Ashtanga Yoga, we offer complementary practices that support whole-body wellness, including Body Mechanics, breathwork, meditation, mobility training, and Sound Bath experiences. These offerings can help improve strength, flexibility, balance, body awareness, stress management, and overall well-being.
Whether you're looking to improve mobility, build strength, manage chronic pain, reduce stress, or simply establish a consistent movement practice, you'll find expert guidance, a supportive community, and a welcoming space to begin your journey.

Starting something new can feel intimidating, but our goal is to make your first experience comfortable, welcoming, and enjoyable.
1. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.
2. Bring a yoga mat if you have one. If not, you're welcome to borrow one from the studio.
3. Bring a small hand towel and water bottle.
4. Leave your shoes in the designated cubby area before entering the practice space.
5. Please avoid wearing strong perfumes, colognes, or heavily scented products out of consideration for other students.
Your first class is focused on learning the foundations of the practice. You can expect to:
1. Learn basic breathing techniques used in Ashtanga Yoga.
2. Practice Sun Salutations A and B.
3. Begin learning foundational standing postures.
4. Explore elements of the finishing sequence.
5. Receive individualized guidance and modifications when needed.
6. Learn about the history, culture, and traditions of Ashtanga Yoga.
Most first-time students practice for approximately 45–60 minutes. As your practice develops over time, your practice sessions may gradually become longer as you learn additional postures.
Most importantly, you will not be expected to memorize the sequence, be flexible, or "keep up" with anyone else. We meet you where you are and help you build your practice step by step.
If you've been wondering whether Ashtanga Yoga is right for you, the best way to find out is to experience it for yourself.
You do not need experience.
You do not need flexibility.
You do not need to be in perfect shape.
You simply need a willingness to begin.

It’s a progressive unfolding — from movement, to strength, to surrender.

Surrender to the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method with careful emphasis on the traditional vinyasa method and have fun along the journey. Experience the integrity and purity of the Ashtanga Yoga practice and be prepared to sweat. After practice, we will have a talk on yoga and we will wrap up with a conference and Q&A session!

One-on-One Guidance in a Group Setting “Mysore style” is traditionally practiced silently with individual instruction. Each student works at their own pace, receiving personalized guidance and hands-on adjustments as needed.
This is the best way to learn and internalize the Ashtanga system while developing consistency, confidence, and depth in your practice.

Explore how strength is cultivated in yoga, not only through the body, but through the steadiness of the mind. Strength is not force or rigidity. In the yogic sense, it is the quiet power of sthira, a grounded stability that allows us to meet challenge with clarity, patience, and presence.
Work with strength-building drills, resistance-based training, and intelligent progressions that support the development of resilient, functional strength. Drawing from both classical yoga methodology and contemporary movement science, you will learn how to engage muscles with precision, protect the joints, and build capacity in a way that supports long-term practice.
At the same time, we will explore the inner attitude of strength. The discipline to stay, to breathe, and to remain steady when the practice becomes demanding is itself a form of yoga. As the body grows stronger, so too does the mind’s ability to remain calm, focused, and unwavering.
Open to all levels, this workshop offers practical tools to build physical strength while cultivating the deeper, more enduring strength that lies at the heart of the practice.
